Here we had excellent views of 12 Sulphur-rumped Tanagers... in a single flock! A nice pair of Long-tailed Tyrants scoped at close range! We heard a Jet Antbird, and taped in a Barred Puffbird, singing his plaintive rising Whooooo-following by a slow but lower wheeeeew! Outstanding! |

A lifer that has been haunting me for quite some time! How gratifying to see them so well--and a mated pair! |

Carlos, Jerry & Linda Harrison |
After doing business at the sale's office, we went to my favorite spot to find Altos specialties. Along the way, a White Hawk posed for us on an exposed branch as did a Great Black Hawk. This area is superb for birding! We had great views of Tufted Flycatcher, Spotted Woodcreeper, a female Snowcap and a Brown-billed Scythebill, which promptly came after being called in! What an awesome bird with that huge curved bill, seemingly too big to be useful! We got excellent scope (& digiscope pics!) views for 10 minutes. To top it all off, Linda spotted a tayra,a kind of rainforest weasel, climbing down a huge tree by the road! |

Late morning, my good friends, Jerry & Linda Harrison slowly walked down Semaphore Hill, Jerry scouting for new plants & Linda on the lookout for birds. As they were listening to a Southern Bentbill, Linda spotted a Rufous Motmot, White-tailed Trogon, Cocoa Woodcreeper and then a bicolored Antbird with a Ocellated Antbird--ya-hooo!...with a male Red-capped Manakin watching them watch the antbirds--all within 10 minutes! Good job amigos! |

Though often heard and not seen, particularly early morning at the Canopy Tower, this handsome, medium-sized, bushy tailed fellow is getting to be quite regular along Pipeline Road these days! Like most cuckoos, the Pheasant Cuckoo is a brood parasite, laying eggs in the nests of other birds! Sneaky! |

As my group of 5 birders were enjoying the usual birds of the ammo pond, I suddenly spotted a Collared Forest-Falcon! Though having a large range and not uncommon, this striking falcon is always a favorite of birders! Interestingly, a new species of Forest-Falcon was described in 2003. The Cryptic Forest-Falcon, long confused with the Lined Forest-Falcon, is found in SE Brazil along with its near twin, the Lined. |

Old Gamboa Road continues to be one of the most reliable places to find both Spectacled Owl and Jet Antbird, and today it didn't disappoint! This spectacular owl is one of my favorites, as he seems to be waiting on us every time we come! The chi-urr..chi-urr calls were soon followed by an appearance of the Jet Antbird, which is quite uncommon--but rather easy to find here! |

When we found a nice army ant swarm, things really picked up! Bicolored, Spotted & OCELLATED Antbirds, Plain-brown & Northern Barred-Woodcreepers, Gray-headed Tanager, Red-throated Ant-Tanager, White-breasted Wood-Wren and Song Wren were all in attendance! Friday, we had a great time birding along the Canopy Adventure trail. We found Tawny-crested, Dusky-faced & Bay-headed Tanagers; a nice Bay Wren, a beautiful Golden-collared Manakin, and the pleasing songster, a Orange-billed Nightingale-Thrush! But the main event was finding a Crested Owl, one of my favorites! What a cool owl! |

CHAGRES RIVER |

Carlos Bethancourt |
What a great time we had today birding the Chagres River! Excellent views were had by all of a Great Antshrike that was being harassed by a Yellow-billed Cacique! Incredible! But several on the tour had been wanting to see a Blue Cotinga badly, and some were leaving soon, so the pressure was on! I was scanning every treetop around, Cecropia and then a Sigua blanca and... BAM! There he was...a full-blown male in full regalia! I quickly scoped it & all were satisfied beyond words. In fact, only ooohs & aaahhs and woooows! It was a real birding high for all of us! On the way back we found a White-bellied Antbird taking a roadside bath, and a Black-striped Woodcreeper made an appearance, too, along with about 50 Yellow-rumped Caciques! What a glorious day! |

Gaital is always a fun trip, and today we struck gold! We found a nice hummer, the Green-crowned Brilliant, and Orange-bellied Trogon, Black-faced Grosbeak, Slaty Antwren, Plain Antvireo and Silver-throated Tanager. But the best was the Spotted Barbtail! This smallish, dark-brown bird with obvious white spots below, is both uncommon and inconspicuous as it creeps around on branches. A very nice bird! |

Our new Candelario Trail was rewarding today! Not only did we get the area's usual specialties, such as the Silver-throated & Tawny-crested Tanagers, along with Tawny-faced Gnatwren and a Rufous-and-white Wren, but we also saw a Dull-mantled Antbird, a skulking bird that is always a surprise when located. Another old common name for this rather rare bird is Salvin's Antbird! Awesome! |

El Valle Chiquito is one of the best spots to see Tody Motmot--and it did not disappoint! I am always amazed at this little motmot, so small and unassuming, and quite approachable at times! What a great little bird! Also, we enjoyed seeing Black-bellied Wren, Lance-tailed Manakin—always a crowd favorite—and a Black Hawk-Eagle! |
