PANAMA REPORT by Ken Wilson

Toward the end of the month of May, my wife, Becky and I made a short visit to Panama as guests of Canopy Tower and Canopy Lodge. Talon Tours is offering a tour to Panama in February of 2011, and we were interested to see for ourselves what so many have favorably reported on already.

12 hours of Daylight by Bill Maynard Print E-mail

At the suggestion of Cindy Lippincott and Bob Berman, I organized a group of friends and friends of friends, and together we explored Central Panama from 21 March to 1 April 2010 for 10 days of birding during the end of Panama’s dry season. Although visiting Panama is more expensive during this high season, all members of the group were available then, it offered us all a chance to escape the cold northern winter, and it gave the many photographers in the group more chances of sunny or partly cloudy skies versus overcast and rainy conditions. A variety of habitats, each one drivable in less than 1.5 hours, was selected with overnights at only two locations, Canopy Lodge and Canopy Tower. On August 18, eight tired but happy PAS members arrived home after a 10-day trip to the Canopy Lodge and Canopy Tower in Panama. Orval Carter, Charlie Kahr, Char Glacey, Doug Nail, Doug’s grandson McLain Nail, Brian Coleman, Dianne Benham and Hal Benham were guided by Carlos Bethancourt and, to put it mildly, Carlos was on fire! The group total was 370 birds, including 4 species of owls, 5 manakins, 47 flycatchers, 25 tanagers, 19 hummingbirds, 4 motmots, 5 puffbirds, 5 antbirds, 10 wrens and all 6 species of trogons found in Panama.

Nov2009 - By Barry Zimmer - VENT Print E-mail
Monday, 30 November 2009
The scene upon arriving at the Canopy Lodge for the first time is one not soon forgotten, and this year was certainly no different. Four tray feeders scattered about the garden and adjacent to the dining room were literally swarming with birds. Powder-blue Blue-gray Tanagers were perhaps the most common visitors (we had 35 in view at once!), followed closely by Clay-colored Thrushes.
